Hazel McDaniel and Mary Ann Pontius Scholarships Information 2024

Each scholarship amount - $1000.00 Scholarship/$500.00 per semester

 

Application – You may request a scholarship application by sending your email to Mary E. Price at lprice51@hotmail.com, or by contacting her at 765-426-4563. A completed application can be sent or dropped off at the American Legion Post 11 located at 1801 S. 9th Street, Lafayette, IN 47905, or, emailed to Mary E. Price at her email. Application due date is Friday, April 12th. Unfortunately, incomplete or late applications will be automatically disqualified.

EligibilityThe applicant must be related to a veteran who was, or is, a grandparent, great grandparent, parent, sibling, aunt or uncle. The applicant must be enrolled in an accredited high school at the time of application submission. Before the winner receives scholarship money, proof would have to be shown of enrollment in an accredited school of higher education as a full-time student.

Forfeiture – In the event a recipient is expelled from school, withdraws from school, or doesn’t remain a full-time student, he/she will forfeit the scholarship and the alternate will receive the remainder of the money.

Schools – Scholarship money can be applied to any higher education accredited school. Proof of enrollment in the school is required.

Selection – The Selection Committee is comprised of 6 auxiliary members who serve the American Legion on 9th Street in Lafayette. Scholarship winner and alternate will be announced on April 23rd.

Please choose 2 of the following essay topics using a maximum of 250-500 words per essay question. Typed, double spaced, font size 14. These can be emailed or mailed.

Two written references are required: one from a current teacher, coach or school counselor; one from any family member. These can be emailed or mailed to the American Legion address listed above in care of:

Q: I am related to someone who served on active duty during one of the membership eligibilty dates. Can I join the Auxiliary of The American Legion?

 


A: If your relative who served on active duty during one of the membership eligibility dates and is a member of The American Legion, you may join the American Legion Auxiliary of The American Legion.


However, if the qualifying veteran is deceased you may join the appropriate organization, even if the qualifying veteran was not a member of The American Legion when living.


Contact your local American Legion Auxiliary Unit, complete the application and proudly join the AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY.
